A little bit about the bands on the album...
1.
Dreaded Youth
Available for the first time anywhere, this instrumental tune features members
of local favorites Go Jimmy Go, Microscopic Syllables, Unit 101, and California's
Dynamic Pressure.
2. Jack Johnson <<< Exclusive New Track (Live @ the Castle Theatre,
Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului, Maui)
An exclusive track from this internationally known artist that has appeared
on Saturday Night Live (twice), toured around the world, and his albums have
spent weeks on the Billboard top 200 charts after two debuted in the top three.
This energetic recording from a show on Maui offers one of his hit songs, taken
from the soundboard at a show on Maui -- August 10th, 2004.
3. Chris Murray
Known to many as a member of King Apparatus, Chris Murray tours the globe as
a tremendously successful solo artist as well and this track happens to feature
members of Go Jimmy Go and The Phenomenauts (with ex-members of Hawaii's Red
Session).
4.
Arena Productions featuring Bret from Pepper
Pepper has been gaining world-wide attention lately and this track from a lesser-known
group from the Big Island features their close friend from Pepper on lead vocals.
5.
Chandelle
This female-fronted trio from the island of Kauai has recently received BMI
songwriting honors and moved to Los Angeles to pursue opportunities that have
come as a result of the recent exposure.
6.
Living In Question
Hailing from the Big Island, LIQ was picked up by The Agency Group on the strength
of this song, and toured in support of national acts such as Fishbone and Authority
Zero, among others.
7.
Go Jimmy Go
Hawaii's premiere soulful rocksteady-ska outfit offers a fresh rendition of
their radio hit unavailable anywhere else as of now. Veterans of multiple Vans
Warped Tour appearances, Go Jimmy Go is a fan favorite wherever they play.
8.
Ooklah The Moc
Easily among Hawaii's best reggae groups, this female-fronted track offers just
a taste of what this group has to offer. Catch them at a club and you won't
be diasppointed.
9.
Woody
Four surfers from Oahu's World Famous North Shore that were chosen to open for
the wildly popular New Found Glory last year have since moved to Southern California
in order to pursue music full-time.
10.
Kupa’Aina <<< Exclusive New Track (as heard on NBC TV and ESPN2)
Kupa'aina means people who love this place (Hawai'i), local people, simple island
people. We are a band, a concept, a movement, a family and a hybrid of what
is old and new to this land, we are a mixture of cultures and spiritual influences.
Through our music we try to invoke memories, history, education, culture, identity,
inspire change and reflection and encourage spiritual and communal progress.
It is our hope that in sharing our music we might share a peace of what we love
with you and that you too might share and inspire us in return. Please enjoy
this "raw" track of our song "Simple Island People" previously
it could only be heard as part of the NBC national television show HAWAII we
are happy to support the efforts of the Kokua Foundation. This raw track has
been in demand for sometime now.
11.
Harrison
Not yet available anywhere else, this song comes from a group that was recently
chosen to open for an audience of 1400 people at the My Chemical Romance show.
(Reprise Records).
12.
Microscopic Syllables
Appearing for the first time on any album, this track captures a diverse group
that has opened for far too many national acts to list.
13.
Pennylane
Originally from Kauai, Pennylane moved to Portland, Oregon and were almost immediately
signed to an indie record deal. They too have been invited to perform along
with numerous national acts both in Hawaii and on the mainland.
14.
Pepper
Members of the Volcom Entertainment empire. Coming from Hawaii to the San Diego
area and touring almost non-stop, has brought Pepper to the ranks of heavy rotation
on Southern California's world-renowned KROQ radio station, K-Rock in New York,
and STAR 101.9 in Honolulu, among many many others. They have also been regulars
on the annual Vans Warped Tour for the past half decade.
15.
Pimpbot
When on-air DJ with Star 101.9 and member of the tremendously in-demand group
Go Jimmy Go was not enough, Fernando ('the love machine') started a side-project
and the result is the always entertaining, Pimpbot.
16.
Mixed Nutz
This popular party band has been featured on Time Warner Cable in Hawaii and
dazzled crowds large and small with this catchy song that tends to stay with
the audience long after last call.
17.
Mr. Orange Undercover
Originally from Maui, and named after the film 'Reservoir Dogs', this band has
continued to grow in size and popularity and have spent the last few years in
San Diego making a larger name for themselves and dedicated to making music
and having fun. Returning to the islands for the first time for this albums
three CD release parties.
18.
Suspicious Minds
Quite possibly Hawaii's first official rockabilly band, complete with stand-up
bass. This hard to find track with a country feel helped the band land a sold
out gig with superstars Dashboard Confessional this past year.
19.
The Crud
Heavily influenced by the grunge culture of the Northwest, The Crud is off to
a great start, again, after several committments sidelined the band for a time...
and will undoubtedly become a major force in Hawaii's rock scene.
20.
Geronimo
The youngest contributors to the album, wrapping up High School at the time
of this recording, Geronimo offers a nice upbeat song with a nice message and
a perfect way to sign off! Hope you enjoyed this collection of some of Hawaii's
finest!!

Album History: Inspired by the goals and the people behind the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, after working closely with them on the inaugural Kokua Festival, Hawaiian Express Records began a fundraising campaign dubbed "4% in '04" in which 4% of all Compilation CD sales for the year would be donated directly to their organization... then, as we turned our attention to plans for the new year, an idea to create a brand-new compilation album that could do more to raise both funds and awareness was born. This album is the result of that desire, and the support of some truly great bands. A large portion of the proceeds from the album will be donated to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation!
I would also like to thank all the artists and record labels for their participation, our friends and families, everyone involved with this compilation and everyone at the Foundation, those of you that bought the record for helping us raise funds for the cause, and of course,Ii thank anyone who listens to this collection of artists with ties to hawaii and enjoys their contributions!
Hawaiian Express was not the first, and i'd hope we're not the last to try and support our scene, but this collection marks our tenth anniversary, so I'm also very thankful for all the friends and supporters over the first decade... great bands, good times, and so many nice memories...
...now let's continue to support local music!
as always, if you
have any questions, comments, or concerns... please just let me know!
